‘Whiskers & Tails’, pet grooming salon run by Irene James, has
also ventured into an exciting and a lucrative business avenue of
franchising pet grooming salon outlets throughout India. While
Merylene Walekar, her younger sister plays the perfect
groomer at the salon, Irene handles the business development
of the same. Franchisees will be trained under their very own,
“Whiskers & Tails Academy Of Pet Grooming”. This academy is
ardent on training pet lovers and people passionate about animals.

Over the years, many students have been preferring to fly
abroad to learn pet grooming and the numbers have been increasing
rapidly every year. As an initiative to promote pet
salon businesses and education in this category as per International
Standards, Irene decided to leverage the expertise and
hence decided to bring in International Experts to India. Master
Groomers will be flown in from Thailand, having more than 15
years of experience in the dog grooming industry to train our
franchisee/students,” comments a very excited Irene.
Franchisee business owners will have complete support starting
from hands on training to setting up the entire operations including
guidance on time-tested tools and supplies, through
this programme. “Certification in pet grooming from Whiskers &
Tails Academy Of Pet Grooming will add great value to the
course,” remarks Irene. The Thai Groomers who will train in
Mumbai are accredited by media from local and international
level in more than 500 grooming articles and shows. Some of
these media houses include reuters, CNN, AP and Hong Kong
television. These groomers are currently running most pet
grooming shops in
Thailand. They are guest lecturers in basic grooming class,
business administration and pet business in well known universities
of Thailand. They have also organized and been show
consultants of various dog shows in Thailand.
The investment includes opportunity to work and explore under
this brand. Master designs, artworks, conceptualization for
salon set up (sign boards, designs and stickers) along with 50
hours of training will be provided in Mumbai, with a flexibility of
extra hours in practicals at the salon itself. Required equipments
to manage the salon will be imported from US, few of
which will have a five years warranty. Whiskers & Tails currently
manufactures their own groomers’ bath tubs as per international
standards and hydraulic grooming tables are in
the making. The salon has also tied up with a grooming
brand that is not available in the market to use their products
in the salon.
The training is limited only to four to six students in one
batch. “The only criteria to participate is to be an ardent dog
lover with loads of patience and oodles of passion. The individual
could be the franchisee himself or someone nominated
by the Franchisee to work at the franchised salon.”
says Irene. Other requirements for joining include a 250-300
sq. ft shop space with ample water supply which can be
owned or rented. “During the training, the students will be
well taken care of in terms of accommodating/lodging and
meals in serviced apartments. Everything is well planned
out,” shares Irene.
Additional support right from training on client/groomer relationship,
customer service, post sales service to clients to
scheduling appointments and periodical advertisements by
means of pamphlets, newspapers and magazines will be
provided. The training programme sure looks like a promising
